The journey through time truly was a sight to behold.  A universe filled with stars played around her, planets whirled past her, and the colors were dazzling.  She fell through the cosmos until her feet once again touched the floor of the Bone-Eater's Well.  The familiar smells of the shrine wafted past Kagome's nose--the damp earth, the ancient wood.  Clutching some of the the creeping vines on the sides of the well, Kagome climbed up to the top, and pulled herself out.
The last time she'd been home, it had been before the defeat of Naraku.  She felt guilty--after all, this had to have been the longest she'd ever gone without a return visit to her family.  They were sure to be worried about her by now.
Kagome opened the shrine doors and called out, "Mom, Souta, Grandpa, I'm back!"
As she crossed the open green and walked up the steps to the house, her mother and grandfather came out to greet her.
"Kagome!" said her mother, a pleased smile on her face as she hugged her daughter.  "I'm glad your home safe.  Souta's at school right now, but he'll be home in a few hours.  So how are things in the Feudal Era?"
"Everything's fine, Mom," Kagome said, with forced cheerfulness.  "We defeated Naraku, and the Shikon Jewel is finally gone."
"That's wonderful!"
"So does this mean you've come home to stay?" asked Grandpa.
"Well…it does mean that it's not important for me to be there, but I have friends who'll miss me.  I don't think I'll stop going."
"And Inuyasha," her mother said.  "How is he?  I suppose he'll still come by to pick you up in few days."
"Actually, Mom, I'm not sure about that.  See, Inuyasha's kinda…distracted with something else now."
"Hm?"
Kagome noticed the sudden worried look on her Mom's face.  "It's fine, though," she said, waving her hands in front of her face.  "Without him coming to bother me all the time, I can get some serious studying done--maybe even raise my grades in time for graduation."
"Kagome…" her mother spoke softly, in a tone Kagome had never heard her use before.  "Did something happen between you and Inuyasha?"
The girl pulled at the strap of the old yellow backpack slung on her shoulder, and shook her head.  "I don't want to talk about it right now.  I need to unpack."
Kagome pushed past her mother and grandfather into the house and ran up the stairs to her room.  She dropped the bag on her desk, disregarding the items that spilled out of it, and flung herself on her bed.
Then she cried.  All the tears she'd not allowed herself to cry before now soaked her pillow as she moaned out the name of the Hanyou she loved.

"Hey, Kagome!  Where are you?" Inuyasha shouted.  He sniffed the air, caught her scent on the wind and followed it through the village--ignoring the rather disgruntled looks of the villagers as his loud voice disrupted the calm evening.  "Kagome, come on!  Where are you hiding?"
"Stop all that shouting, Inuyasha," Miroku said, coming up behind the Hanyou.
"Oh, hey, Miroku.  You seen Kagome?"
"Yes.  She left hours ago."
"Left?  What's that mean?"
The monk rolled his eyes.  "She went home, idiot.  Back to her era."
"Why'd she do a stupid thing like that?  And why didn't she say goodbye to me?"
"It's not like she has to stay here all the time.  I'm sure she wanted to see her family again.  And besides, you were in the middle of the lake boating with Kikyou when Kagome left."
Inuyasha crossed his arms, his mood turning sour.  "Well, she could've waited until we came back."
Miroku shook his head in disbelief at Inuyasha's blindness.  "I have a feeling that she preferred it this way.  You haven't exactly been paying attention to her these past couple weeks."
Inuyasha humphed.  "What's that got to do with it?  Kikyou and I have had a lot to talk about."
"Exactly.  I think Kagome feels like she's intruding on your relationship with Kikyou.  Kagome is her reincarnation, after all.  It's not like you never showed a certain affection for her."
Inuyasha's ears twitched.  "I don't know what you're talking about."
Miroku sighed.  There were just some things that Inuyasha couldn't seem to understand, no matter how many times it was explained to him.
Which meant that his ignorance of Kagome's true feelings would continue to hurt the poor girl.
Poor Kagome.
